The ABCs of Writing Picture Books - A Primer for Writers of Kidlit

PastWednesday, May 25, 2022 - 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM

In this three day workshop, we will look at the basic rules for writing a picture book manuscript, as well as several ways to break these rules and still have a great story! Using current and classic published work as examples, we will explore picture books from character and story Arcs and Action, to Beginnings and Book publishing, and end with kooky Climaxes and heart-warming Conclusions. Consider this your introduction to writing for very young children (ages 2-6) and rediscover the sparkly, colorful world of picture books from the inside out. Each class will include discussion, resources, and writing time.

Presented by Amy M. Miller: Amy M. Miller’s essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction, Salon, [PANK], Flyway Journal, The Louisville Review, and more. She received the 2017 Harpur Palate Creative Nonfiction Prize and contributed to Air: A Radio Anthology, published by Books by Hippocampus. She is the former Executive Director of Louisville Literary Arts. A proud recipient of mentorships with children’s writers Jill Esbaum and Hallie Aldeman, her current creative work focuses on children’s picture books and illustration.
