Veteran Suicide Prevention: for Family & Friends

PastTuesday, September 20, 2022 - 06:30 PM - 08:00 PM

Jonathan Marcum, VA Community Engagement and Partnerships Coordinator, presents the S.A.V.E method of suicide prevention and Lethal Means Safety training for families and friends of veterans.

S.A.V.E is a program focused on preventing suicide attempts and saving lives that might otherwise be lost to suicide. It is designed to train everyone who knows a Veteran to be a “gatekeeper.” The role of gatekeepers is connecting those at risk for suicide with people who can help them. You can save lives by being sensitive to people in distress and by connecting them with care. By participating in this training, you will:

• Have a general understanding of the scope of suicide within the United States.

• Know how to identify a Veteran who may be at risk for suicide.

• Know what to do when you identify a Veteran at risk. You are the first responder in a mental health emergency.

Lethal Means Safety (LMS) is increasing safety around potentially lethal methods of suicide, such as firearms and toxic medications, particularly in times of acute crisis.

• Why?

• LMS is one of the few population level interventions that has been shown to decrease suicide rates
