Self-Decoration Camouflage
PastSaturday, March 18, 2023 - 03:00 PM - 04:30 PM
Join COLLIDER Artist-in-Residence, Edwin Ramirez, for this workshop. Ramirez says: "Self-decoration camouflage is a method that animals and humans use for concealment in the environments that they frequent. Much of my work explores this method in various ways as I often take immediate inspiration from the surrounding environment and the natural elements that exist there. In today’s world, we often think of Art as something that has to be extravagant, 'Extra,' or flashy to get noticed due to the way we consume art (and artists!) on social media. I feel this way often, and it has led me to believe that creating ephemeral works of art that blend into the environment is a form of artistic resistance. It is a ritual of sorts, as it feels so freeing to shed away the social pressure of what is usually expected from artists while still practicing a craft. During this workshop, we will discuss the concept of creating with the natural world that is right in front of you. We will talk about the beauty and abundance of the environments we are in and how to be mindful when collecting natural material. Lastly, we will create small works that will blend into the environment outside the library. Participants are encouraged to bring small natural materials from an area easily accessible to you, such as your own back yard! Leaves, acorns, stones, sticks, plant matter, etc. are all great materials to work with. There will be many natural materials available for participants if you are unable to bring your own." This program is recommended for ages 8+. Registration is requested at Liz.Magee@lfpl.org.
